As an early birthday present to myself, tomorrow’s episode of the Emergency Broadcast Hour will be a tribute to one of my all-time favorite albums, Steely Dan’s Gaucho.

Over the course of the two-hour show, you will hear songs from the record itself, as well as other audio that links impressionistically to the album’s themes and motifs.

Released one year after Christopher Lasch’s book The Culture of Narcissism, Gaucho captures a sick, slow moment of cultural burnout. The album tells a tale of sensualism, indulgence, and failure — & not just in the songs themselves, but also in the history of the recording. The album may sound slick, but nevertheless strains to conceal the thousands of fuck-ups and do-overs that went into its making.

So listen in tomorrow — it should be a good one.
